U.S. consumer sentiment declined in May for the fifth consecutive month, with the Consumer Sentiment Index dropping to 50.8, the second-lowest reading on record. Concerns about future inflation and President Trump’s tariffs contributed to the decline. The survey revealed that nearly three-quarters of consumers mentioned tariffs, up from almost 60% in April. Inflation expectations for the year ahead rose to 7.3%, the highest since April 1981, with a 4.6% long-run inflation expectation.
