US taxpayers abroad face June 16 filing deadline: IRS

From Yahoo Finance: 2025-05-26 08:17:00

The IRS extended the deadline for US taxpayers abroad to file their 2024 federal income tax returns to June 16, considering June 15 being a Sunday. Eligibility applies to those residing outside the US, with military personnel stationed abroad included. Taxpayers must attach a statement to indicate eligibility for the extension.

Those unable to meet the June 16 deadline can request an extension to October 15, 2025. An extension to file does not mean an extension to pay, with interest accruing on late payments after April 15. Various electronic payment options are available, including direct transfers for taxpayers without a US bank account.

Military members abroad or in combat zones during tax season may qualify for additional extensions. Taxpayers in affected areas like Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank have a deadline of September 30, 2025, to file and pay. Those with foreign financial accounts over $10,000 in 2024 must file Form 114 with FinCEN.

Probationary IRS employees reinstated by the US government were asked to return to the office by May 23. The information was originally published by The Accountant.
