Waters Corp, a U.S.-based medical equipment manufacturer, is experiencing increased demand from Indian drugmakers rushing to develop generic versions of popular weight-loss drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic. The active ingredient, Semaglutide, goes off patent in India in 2026, creating opportunities in the $150 billion global market.

Local drugmakers in India, including Biocon, Cipla, Dr. Reddy’s, and Lupin, are competing to produce cheaper versions of weight-loss drugs to capture a share of the lucrative global market. Waters Corp’s India unit, contributing 8% to sales, is poised for double-digit revenue growth on the back of this trend, with a focus on GLP-1 agonists.

Waters Corp, headquartered in Massachusetts, operates nine sites in India with over 430 employees. The company anticipates annual growth contribution of 70-100 basis points from its India business in the near-term, with an additional 30 basis points from testing for GLP-1 drugs. The company recently raised its profit forecast and reported strong quarterly results driven by higher demand in Asia and the Americas.
