Severe winter weather impacted Saia’s first quarter earnings, with closures and limited operations in key markets like Atlanta, Dallas, and Houston. The weather caused Saia’s operating ratio to deteriorate by 670 basis points to 91.1%, with revenue up 4.3% to $787.6 million due to increased volumes in recently opened terminals. To mitigate disruptions, Saia ran extra linehaul miles and dock operations. Other carriers like Estes Express Lines, TForce Freight, and XPO also faced operational impacts from weather events like blizzards in the Midwest and snowstorms from Kansas to Delaware earlier this year.
