99 Speed Mart, Malaysia’s largest convenience store chain, debuted on the Southeast Asia 500 list after its $2.2 billion IPO, ranking 158 in revenue. Founder Lee Thiam Wah, wheelchair-bound due to polio, started with a roadside stall, growing 99 Speed Mart to 2,833 outlets and 40% market share. The IPO raised $532 million, making Lee a billionaire. Plans for global expansion are in the works, with no concrete details yet. Lee also holds Burger King franchising rights and is a major Alliance Bank Malaysia shareholder. Shares are up 9.57% since the IPO, despite Malaysia’s benchmark index falling 8%.
