Ameren Missouri plans to build an 800MW natural gas energy center and battery storage system in Jefferson County to enhance energy supply and grid resilience by 2028. The project, Big Hollow Energy Center, will offer backup power during extreme weather and peak demand periods, supporting a balanced generation portfolio.

Modeled after the Castle Bluff Energy Center, the Big Hollow project will utilize natural gas capabilities and a 400MW battery installation to respond to fluctuating energy demands. Ameren Missouri aims to expand its battery storage capacity to 1.8GW by 2042, with a strategic location benefiting from existing infrastructure and transmission lines.

Ameren Missouri’s chairman Mark Birk emphasizes the importance of investing in energy infrastructure to meet customer needs and prepare for future demand. The company’s battery storage expansion strategy aims to reach 1GW capacity by 2030, supporting a balanced mix of generation technologies across the region for maximum energy output.

Senior vice-president Ajay Arora highlights the significance of strategically locating generation technologies to optimize energy output. Ameren Missouri’s service area covers 60 counties and 500 communities, including the greater St. Louis area, emphasizing the company’s commitment to reliable energy supply and infrastructure development.
