Australian federal police have contacted over 90 Australians in a crackdown on criminal use of crypto ATMs, including a 77-year-old widow scammed out of $281,947 in an online dating scam. Scammers are using crypto ATMs to dupe victims, with one victim sending her entire life savings in just 18 months. Police have charged one person and issued formal cautions to four others suspected of illegal activity related to crypto ATMs. Australia has the third-largest number of crypto ATMs in the world, with 1,871 in operation. Scam victims are manipulated into feeding thousands of dollars into crypto ATMs through fake promises of love, employment, investment, or quick profits. Australia’s online cybercrime reporting system received 150 unique reports of scams involving crypto ATMs between January 2024 and January 2025, with losses exceeding $2 million.
