Blue Lion supercomputer by NVIDIA with Vera Rubin architecture to launch in 2026

Germany’s Leibniz Supercomputing Centre, LRZ, is upgrading to the Blue Lion supercomputer, offering 30x more computing power than its predecessor, SuperMUC-NG. Blue Lion will run on NVIDIA Vera Rubin architecture, combining GPU and CPU for accelerated science and AI applications. The system is set to launch in the second half of 2026.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is constructing the Blue Lion supercomputer, utilizing next-generation HPE Cray technology and NVIDIA GPUs. The system features direct liquid-cooling to efficiently cool the supercomputer and support researchers in climate, turbulence, physics, and machine learning projects. Heat from the racks will be reused to warm nearby buildings, promoting sustainability.
In Berkeley, California, the Doudna supercomputer, named after Nobel laureate Jennifer Doudna, will also run on the Vera Rubin architecture. Built by Dell Technologies, Doudna is designed for real-time workflows and optimized energy efficiency to advance fusion energy, materials discovery, and biology research. It is expected to deliver 10x more application performance using 2-3x the power compared to its predecessor.
Blue Lion and Doudna represent a shift in high-performance computing, integrating AI, simulation, and data in real-time workflows.
