Brazil has removed tax exemption on cryptocurrency gains, imposing a 17.5% tax on all profits for individuals. Previously, up to $6,300 worth of crypto per month was exempt, with higher gains taxed progressively at up to 22.5%. The new rule applies a flat tax, impacting small investors more than large holders.

The tax will apply to all assets regardless of location, and losses can be offset within a rolling five-quarter window. The government aims to increase tax revenue after backtracking on a proposed financial transaction tax hike. The new measure also affects fixed-income investments and online betting, with changes to tax rates for both.
