BTS Bioenergy, formerly Bioenergy Devco, rebrands in May 2024 under new CEO Nick Thomas. The company’s European division has a long history, but its only completed American digester project is the Maryland Bioenergy Center, opened in 2021.
Anaerobic digestion technology growth in the U.S. has been slower than anticipated, with Bioenergy Devco receiving a $100 million commitment in 2021. Founder Shawn Kreloff stepped down as CEO, replaced by Thomas, who brought in new leadership to drive growth and expansion in the industry.
Thomas is focusing on making BTS economically viable, adding anaerobic digestion capacity to a composting facility in Delaware and planning a facility in Georgia. The company decided not to pursue a project in Long Beach, California, due to revenue concerns, shifting their focus to maximizing the Maryland Bioenergy Center’s potential.
Despite reaching nameplate capacity, the Maryland Bioenergy Center faced issues with its wastewater pretreatment system. BTS scaled back operations to address deficiencies, and the facility is now scaling back up after upgrades. Howard County Department of Public Works confirmed progress in upgrading treatment systems.
Thomas is reorienting BTS towards prospects that align with the company’s goals, including maximizing revenue from the Maryland Bioenergy Center. The company continues to work on increasing revenue and efficiency at the facility. Bioenergy Devco’s tipping fees have doubled in the past year, with expectations of further increases. The facility has yet to reach its revenue ceiling due to high demand for organics processing. The company received a $30 million investment for facility improvement and plans to fundraise for new projects quickly.
Bioenergy Devco is open to internal growth mechanisms and acquisitions to fuel expansion in the organics processing industry. CEO Shawn Thomas aims for BTS to become a class leader in the field, highlighting the passion within the company to excel in their work and make a significant impact.
