The average American’s wealth is not primarily in 401(k)s or mutual funds, but in their house, which makes up 30% of their total net worth according to the Federal Reserve’s 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances.
Retirement accounts like 401(k)s and IRAs make up 25% of household wealth, while public equities and mutual funds make up 15%. Private business ownership or equity stakes account for 12%.
Other real estate, including rental properties and vacation homes, makes up 10% of household wealth, while cash and deposits only make up 5%. “Other” assets like vehicles and collectibles total just 3%.
