Cathie Wood of Ark Investment bought $18.5 million of a popular AI stock nearing an all-time high on June 16. Wood’s funds have seen a volatile year, swinging from gains to losses. The flagship Ark Innovation ETF is up 15.9% year-to-date, outperforming the S&P 500’s 1.9% gain as of June 18.
Wood’s investment strategy focuses on emerging high-tech companies in AI, blockchain, biomedical tech, and robotics. The Ark Innovation ETF has had fluctuations in value due to the volatility of these companies. Wood remains optimistic on tech stocks and the potential for a productivity-led recovery.
Wood recently bought 128,163 shares of Nvidia worth $18.5 million. She had previously sold all her Nvidia stake in 2022 but began buying again in April amid tariff tensions. Nvidia reported strong fiscal first-quarter results, but its revenue forecast for the July quarter fell short due to China export curbs.
The U.S. Commerce Department is considering more restrictions on advanced technology exports to China, which could affect Nvidia, as China accounts for 13% of its sales. Nvidia’s CEO has warned that export controls could impact the company’s bottom line if the two countries fail to reach a trade deal. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed concern over the growing number of AI researchers in China, fearing it could challenge the US as a global tech leader. Nvidia stock closed at $145.48 on June 18, up 8.3% YTD. Analysts predict a 19% upside with an average price target of $173.19, fueled by AI-driven growth.
