Citigroup is ditching its pro-gun-safety policy and updating policies to prohibit discrimination based on political affiliation. The move comes as conservative groups gain influence in Washington, D.C. Citi established firearms sales restrictions for business clients in 2018 after the Parkland mass shooting.
Citi will no longer have a specific firearms policy and will update its code of conduct and global financial access policy to prohibit discrimination based on political beliefs. This change codifies the company’s long-standing practice of non-discrimination.
The Trump administration and conservative groups have accused banks of dropping customers due to conservative political views. Legislation has been introduced in both the Senate and House to penalize banks for refusing business with credit-worthy individuals.
Citi reevaluated its policies to ensure fair and unbiased access while managing risks appropriately. The bank will work with regulators and officials to improve transparency and trust in the banking sector.
Reaction to Citi’s changes varied. The Second Amendment Foundation supported the shift, aligning with the current administration. Everytown for Gun Safety expressed disappointment, stating the 2018 policy was a common-sense approach to public safety. Citi’s previous firearms policy aimed to prevent firearms from reaching the wrong hands.
