Energy stocks performed poorly in contrast to the rest of the market, with significant decreases

Energy stocks stood out on Wednesday as the S&P 500 energy sector dropped 1.7%, the worst performing sector. Utilities followed, down 0.5%, while financials and consumer staples were down 0.1%. Despite this, the rest of the major sectors were on the rise. Valero Energy, Phillips 66, and Marathon Petroleum all saw decreases of 3% or more, as WTI Crude oil futures fell by 1.1%.
