A report by Ember predicts a 7% decrease in EU gas demand by 2030, reflecting a current downward trend, with demand dropping from 404bcm in 2021 to 326bcm in 2023. Plans indicate a further decline to 302bcm by 2030, contrasting with proposals to expand LNG import capacity by 54%.

Renewables are set to dominate the EU’s energy mix, with plans to double wind and solar capacity in five years. By 2030, renewables are expected to generate two-thirds of the EU’s electricity, while electrification rates in final energy consumption will rise from 23% to 30%.

The European Commission and Polish Presidency launched the Energy Union Task Force to address energy policy challenges and promote cooperation for a cohesive Energy Union. Ember’s analysis highlights the decline of fossil gas and the increasing role of renewables in the EU’s energy transition.
