Fashion retailer Shein and Reliance Retail plan to expand their Indian supplier base and start international sales of India-made Shein-branded clothes within 6-12 months. Shein sells low-priced apparel shipped from China to 150 countries, focusing on the U.S. market. Reliance aims to have 1,000 Indian factories making Shein-branded clothes. Shein’s app was banned in India in 2020 but returned in February under a licensing deal with Reliance. The Shein-Reliance partnership aims to create a network of Indian suppliers for Shein-branded clothes. Shein’s expansion in India mirrors global interest in finding suppliers outside China due to the trade war. The Shein India app has had 2.7 million downloads and offers 12,000 designs, with plans to replicate global best-sellers at lower costs. Reliance aims to emulate Shein’s on-demand manufacturing model and invest in suppliers to help the partnership go global.
