Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk announced plans to launch a robotaxi network by 2020, utilizing existing Tesla vehicles with self-driving capabilities. The network will allow owners to rent out their cars when not in use. Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has been testing autonomous vehicles since 2009 and plans to launch a commercial robotaxi service in the coming months. Zoox, a startup founded in 2014, is also developing self-driving technology for future robotaxi services. Tesla’s robotaxi program could potentially disrupt the transportation industry, but faces competition from established players like Waymo and emerging startups like Zoox.
