Ford reports 16% sales increase in May amid employee pricing, tariffs

Ford Motor reported a 16.3% increase in U.S. sales for May, driven by employee pricing program amid rising tariffs. Sales of vehicles with traditional engines rose by 17.2%, while hybrid models saw a 29% jump. Electric vehicle sales dropped 25%, including the electric F-150. This marks the third consecutive year-over-year sales increase for Ford.

The employee pricing program has been a success for Ford, connecting with customers and boosting sales. After President Trump’s 25% auto tariffs took effect, Ford announced some price increases on vehicles imported from Mexico. The price hikes, implemented after May 2, were due to seasonal adjustments and tariff impacts.

Consumers rushed to buy new vehicles in March ahead of potential tariff-related price increases, boosting second quarter sales. However, Cox Automotive forecasts a slower sales pace for May compared to the prior two months. The seasonally adjusted annual rate is expected to be around 16 million, up slightly from last year but lower than March and April.
