However, the Achilles’ heel of AI is the need for energy to power data centers running AI models. Natural gas is a dominant and fast-growing fuel source for the power grid, making it a potential bridge to fuel AI data centers. Data center operators are turning to Behind the Meter (BTM) solutions, bypassing traditional power grids to source natural gas directly for on-site power generation. These solutions offer grid independence, cost savings, rapid deployment, and reduced power losses. However, regulatory hurdles and political challenges remain in adopting natural gas for AI data centers.
