Mexico’s antitrust watchdog will decide next week on whether Google broke laws in digital advertising, potentially facing an 8% fine of annual Mexican revenue. The company is accused of monopolizing the market, with a decision expected by June 17. Google is challenged by Mexico’s regulator, with a history of similar cases.
Cofece requested Google’s financial info from tax authorities, as the company faces allegations of establishing a monopoly in Mexican digital advertising. The U.S. tech giant’s parent company, Alphabet, does not disclose specific revenue numbers for Mexico. In 2024, revenue for the “other Americas” region was $20.4 billion.
In a separate case, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum filed a lawsuit against Google for renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” Lawmakers have urged Cofece to resolve Google’s case. If ruled against, Google’s legal troubles in the U.S. reflect concerns over its search monopoly and online advertising dominance.
