HII christened the future USS Jeremiah Denton (DDG 129), honoring former U.S. Sen. Jeremiah Denton Jr., a Vietnam War veteran who famously blinked “torture” in Morse code during captivity. The ceremony included the bottle-breaking tradition by the ship’s co-sponsors, daughters of the namesake. The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer represents the next generation of surface combatants with advanced capabilities like the AN/SPY-6(V)1 Air and Missile Defense Radar. Ingalls Shipbuilding has delivered 35 destroyers to the U.S. Navy and has five more Flight IIIs in construction. The event highlighted the importance of naval ships and recognized the shipbuilding workforce as a vital national asset.
