Indonesian vehicle sales fall 15% in May

New vehicle sales in Indonesia dropped 15% in May 2025 to 60,613 units, reflecting weakened market sentiment due to lower consumer purchasing power and trade uncertainties. GDP growth slowed to 4.9% in Q1 2025, with Bank Indonesia cutting interest rates to 5.50%. Toyota sales increased while other Japanese automakers saw declines. BEV sales surged.

In the first five months of 2025, the Indonesian vehicle market contracted by 5.5% to 316,981 units, with light passenger vehicle sales down 5% and commercial vehicle sales decreased by over 6%. Toyota’s sales increased, but Daihatsu, Honda, Mitsubishi, and Suzuki saw declines. BEV sales tripled.

Overall vehicle production in Indonesia decreased by 1.4% to 466,290 units year-to-date, while exports of fully-assembled vehicles rose by over 7% to 192,501 units. The market is facing challenges due to weakening consumer purchasing power and trade uncertainties, impacting sales of both traditional and electric vehicles.
