May’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) report showed a 0.1% increase, easing inflation pressures on a monthly basis. On an annual basis, CPI rose 2.4% in May, slightly up from April’s 2.3%. Core CPI, excluding food and energy costs, rose 2.8% over the past year. Car and apparel prices declined, contributing to the cooler core CPI reading.

President Trump’s tariffs have impacted prices, with tariffs on China remaining significant. A truce with China temporarily pauses big tariff hikes, but baseline duties for most countries are still in place. Mexico and Canada face fentanyl-related tariffs, while steel, aluminum, and auto tariffs remain unchanged.

The US and China have reached a framework to ease tariff tensions, pending final approval. Core inflation remains high due to shelter and service costs, with the shelter index rising 3.9% over the last year. Energy prices dropped 1% month over month, while food prices rose 0.3% in May.

Medical care, motor vehicle insurance, household furnishings, and recreation prices have increased over the last year. Stay tuned for updates on this breaking news report.
