Ivanhoe Mines plans to restart Kakula Mine operations after seismic events prompted a temporary suspension. The western side is set to resume later this month, pending dewatering progress. The mine is part of the Kamoa-Kakula copper project in the DRC, managed by Kamoa Copper, a joint venture with Zijin Mining Group.
To manage water inflows, Kamoa Copper has initiated a two-stage dewatering plan, with temporary pumps installed and high-capacity pumps on order. The mine’s phase one and two concentrators are currently processing ore from surface stockpiles. Operations on the western side will resume soon, feeding ore into the concentrators.
Despite the setback, the mine has achieved over 18 months of underground development ahead of schedule. Operations at the Kamoa underground mine and phase three concentrator are unaffected. Ivanhoe Mines and Kamoa Copper are conducting a comprehensive geotechnical assessment to finalize restart plans for both sides of the Kakula Mine, expected to be announced next week.
