Kimberly-Clark is close to selling its Kleenex and tissue businesses outside of North America to Brazilian pulpmaker Suzano for $3.5 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal. The deal could be finalized as early as Thursday, sources say. This move comes after bids from Royal Golden Eagle and Asia Pulp & Paper Co for the $4 billion business.
The international tissue business generates approximately $500 million in EBITDA annually and was put up for sale as part of Kimberly-Clark’s restructuring efforts. The sale proceeds amidst challenges from President Trump’s trade tariffs, which have impacted the company’s profitability. Suzano had previously acquired Kimberly-Clark’s Brazilian tissue paper operations in 2022.
Neither Kimberly-Clark nor Suzano have commented on the potential deal. The sale of the tissue business is a strategic move for Kimberly-Clark, as the company seeks to streamline operations and adapt to changing market conditions. The finalization of the deal could mark a significant shift in the global tissue paper industry landscape.
