Tom Bodett, iconic voice of Motel 6 ads, sues chain for unauthorized use of his name and voice after $1.2 million payment was missed by new owner, OYO. Lawsuit filed in federal court seeks damages and recognition for Bodett’s contributions to the brand. Motel 6 expresses surprise and hopes for amicable resolution.

Bodett, a 70-year-old author and voice actor, known for NPR appearances and Ken Burns documentaries, had been Motel 6’s lead spokesman since 1986. He coined the famous “we’ll leave the light on for you” slogan. Motel 6 has over 1,450 locations in the U.S. and Canada, acquired by OYO in December for $525 million.

Negotiations for a settlement failed, leading Bodett to file the lawsuit seeking $1.2 million in damages, plus additional compensation and a share of profits. G6 Hospitality, Motel 6’s parent company, expresses appreciation for Bodett’s contributions and commitment to keeping the lights on for guests.

The case, Bodett et al v G6 Hospitality LLC et al, is ongoing in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York. Bodett’s lawsuit claims violation of his rights under contract and federal trademark law, seeking recognition and compensation for his role in building Motel 6.
