Looming US Treasury debt auctions an important sentiment test

Investors are closely watching U.S. Treasury auctions this week as a test of market sentiment on U.S. assets. The auctions will include $119 billion in three- and 10-year notes, as well as 30-year bonds, with concerns about demand dropping and supply increasing. Analysts expect the auctions to go smoothly, with no meaningful dent in demand.
Last month’s three-year note auction showed solid results, with foreign central banks taking 62% of the total issuance. Offshore investors typically focus on shorter-term Treasuries, while the 10-year note auction outcome is harder to forecast as it coincides with the release of U.S. consumer price index data. There are no clear signs of foreign sponsorship pulling back from Treasuries.
The U.S. 30-year bond auction could go either way, with analysts noting a potential weakness given recent poor long-dated sales globally. While yields on 30-year bonds have surged, demand from dealers has remained stable. Last month’s 30-year auction was not well-received, with demand from foreign investors potentially plateauing.
