Major crypto hacks fell 40% in May, says PeckShield

In May, crypto hacks saw a significant drop, with the biggest incident accounting for 90% of total losses. Blockchain security firm PeckShield reported ~20 major hacks, resulting in $244.1M in losses, a 39.29% decrease from April. The largest hack involved Cetus DEX, with $223 million lost in just 24 hours.
The majority of funds from the biggest hack were frozen, with $157 million recovered. Another major exploit targeted Cork Protocol, resulting in a $12 million loss. Other significant hacks included a DPRK-linked attack for $5.2 million, an MBU token exploit for $2.2 million, and a MapleStory Universe exploit for $1.2 million.
The crypto industry is intensifying efforts to combat hackers, with BitMEX uncovering security gaps in the Lazarus Group, a North Korean cybercrime network. In Q1 2025, hackers stole over $1.63 billion in crypto, with the Bybit exploit accounting for more than 92% of total losses. February saw a record $1.53 billion stolen, primarily due to the Bybit hack.
