Krispy Kreme and McDonald’s are ending their partnership, with Krispy Kreme doughnuts no longer being sold at McDonald’s locations after July 2. The companies paused their partnership in May due to slowing sales, leading to the decision to scrap the deal altogether.
Krispy Kreme CEO Josh Charlesworth stated that efforts to align costs with demand were unsuccessful, making the partnership unsustainable. Krispy Kreme will now focus on expanding through high-volume retail points and international franchise growth.
McDonald’s shares slightly dipped, while Krispy Kreme’s stock rose more than 1%. McDonald’s has faced sluggish sales and posted its largest same-store sales decline since 2020 in the first quarter.
Krispy Kreme shares have dropped about 73% this year, with the company posting a loss of around $33 million in the first quarter. Both companies are looking to adjust their strategies amidst changing consumer behaviors and economic conditions.
