Meta Platforms has invested $14.3 billion for a 49 percent stake in Scale AI, valuing the company at $29 billion. Co-founder Alexandr Wang will lead a new “superintelligence” division at Meta, with Scale’s chief strategy officer as interim CEO. The partnership aims to enhance AI model training with accurate datasets.
Wang, who founded Scale AI in 2016, will bring his expertise in human-validated training data to Meta. This move is seen as Meta’s push to strengthen its AI capabilities, shifting towards a more commercial approach. Meta’s investment signals its ambition to compete with industry leaders like Google and OpenAI in the AI space.
Despite concerns from existing clients, Meta has assured that it will not have privileged access to Scale AI’s customer data. Early backers like Accel and Index Ventures will benefit from the deal, with the opportunity to sell half of their holdings. The acquisition is Meta’s second-largest ever, showcasing its commitment to developing advanced AI technologies.
