Meta Platforms has agreed to acquire a 49% stake in AI startup Scale AI for $14.8 billion, providing labeled data crucial for developing advanced tools. Scale AI’s investors and employees stand to benefit from the deal, pending finalization. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is actively recruiting top AI researchers to enhance the company’s AI efforts.
Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang will lead a new “superintelligence” lab at Meta as part of the deal. Meta is working to address perceptions of falling behind in the AI race after setbacks with previous AI models. Regulatory concerns related to Meta’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp may be mitigated through the deal with Scale AI.
Scale AI, valued at $13.8 billion last spring, expects over $2 billion in revenue this year. The company’s customers include tech giants like Microsoft, Meta, and Cisco Systems. The potential deal with Meta could help Scale AI avoid additional regulatory scrutiny and boost its growth and revenue.
