Metaplanet, also known as Japan’s Strategy, plans to acquire 100,000 BTC by the end of 2026, up from its previous target of 21,000 BTC. The company currently holds 8,888 BTC and aims to purchase at least 91,112 BTC in the next 18 months.
Metaplanet is increasing its Bitcoin holdings in response to global economic changes and shifts in the financial system. CEO Simon Gerovich cites a move away from traditional safe assets like government bonds and a revaluation of gold. The company sees Bitcoin as a strategic asset due to its scarcity and ease of transfer.
To fund the Bitcoin purchases, Metaplanet will issue up to 555 million shares, in addition to the 210 million shares already issued under the previous plan. The company aims to hold over 210,000 BTC by the end of 2027, joining the “1% Club” of entities holding at least 1% of Bitcoin’s total supply.
Metaplanet’s accelerated Bitcoin acquisition strategy follows a warning from Standard Chartered Bank about the risks associated with public companies investing in Bitcoin. The bank reports that 61 companies own a combined 3.2% of all Bitcoin in existence, highlighting the growing trend of Bitcoin treasury strategies among corporations.
