Mitsubishi Corp is in talks to buy U.S. shale assets from Aethon Energy for about $8 billion, gaining a major natural gas operation near the Gulf coast and export facilities. The deal is not guaranteed, with RedBird Capital Partners and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan also involved. Shares in Mitsubishi dipped slightly post-announcement.
Mitsubishi has a strong presence in the global LNG sector, with equity in multiple projects worldwide. Aethon’s assets focus on the Haynesville shale formation in Louisiana and East Texas, making it a significant private U.S. gas producer. Aethon also owns over 1,400 miles of pipelines in the Haynesville basin and Wyoming.
Talks between Mitsubishi and Aethon were reported by Bloomberg News, with Reuters confirming ongoing discussions. Both Mitsubishi and Aethon declined to comment. Mitsubishi’s interest in acquiring Aethon’s assets aligns with its strategy of expanding its presence in the LNG sector, with a focus on production, trading, marketing, and logistics.
