Nepal has started exporting 40MW of electricity to Bangladesh through India’s power grid, showcasing regional energy cooperation. India plays a crucial role as a facilitator in South Asian electricity trade. This follows an agreement signed in October 2024 among Nepal, Bangladesh, and NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam from India.

Nepal’s Energy Minister revealed that the country is also exporting 80MW to Bihar state in India. This move has opened up a 5GW export market for Nepal. India is actively involved in importing and exporting electricity within the region, supplying power to neighbors like Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar while drawing from countries like Nepal and Bhutan.

Discussions are underway to link India’s grid with Sri Lanka to enhance regional energy networks. This development aligns with Nepal’s progress in hydropower capabilities. An Indian company is currently working on a 900MW hydroelectric project in Nepal. Agreements have been made to establish high-capacity transmission lines between India and Nepal for future power exchanges.

Nepal, with an installed capacity exceeding 3GW, primarily from hydroelectricity, seeks investments from Indian entities to boost hydropower production. The goal is to meet domestic needs and generate surplus for export, focusing on New Delhi’s growing market demand.
