Canadian pork and poultry producer Olymel is investing C$142m in expanding its La Fernandière plant in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. Construction will begin soon, aiming for operational status by spring 2026. The company also plans to close two local facilities to optimize operations and offer affected employees roles at other locations.

The upgraded facility, located 12km from the Cap-de-la-Madeleine plant, will offer more consistent production and a broader range of pork and poultry products. The expansion will increase production capacity significantly and feature advanced technologies like an industrial battery system and autonomous operations. Olymel aims to create new job opportunities and enhance efficiency.

CEO Yanick Gervais stated that the state-of-the-art plant will allow for expansion and boost efficiency. The expansion is expected to create about 50 direct jobs, bringing the total workforce to 400. Olymel’s investment in Canada’s plant expansion comes amidst closures of other facilities due to falling production volumes in recent years.
