A survey by AICPA and CIMA found one in five business leaders believe the US is already in a recession. 34% expect one by end of 2025. 39% are unsure. 18% predict a severe recession, while 57% expect a moderate one.
Optimism has dramatically decreased since the November election, with only 27% of executives feeling positive about the US economy. Businesses are now cautious, delaying hiring and investment due to increased uncertainty, particularly around tariffs.
Over half of respondents are uncertain due to tariffs, with 35% increasing prices for customers. Another survey by the Center for Audit Quality found 60% of audit partners see a recession as the biggest economic risk for businesses. Sixty-three percent are concerned about trade issues.
The AICPA survey, based on 328 responses from finance leaders, including CFOs and controllers, highlights a shift from optimism to caution among executives. Uncertainty around tariffs is leading to delayed hiring and investment, with many bracing for potential volatility in the economy.
