Qualcomm vs. AMD: Which Chipmaker Offers Stronger Growth in 2025?
From Nasdaq: 2025-06-20 09:55:00
Qualcomm Technologies Inc. and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. are competing in the mobile, PC, and data center markets with a focus on AI and advanced chip technologies. Qualcomm offers high-performance, low-power chip designs for various devices, while AMD has evolved into an enterprise-focused company with processors powered by “Zen” CPU and “Vega” GPU architectures.
Qualcomm is transitioning to a connected processor company for the intelligent edge with the launch of the Qualcomm X85 5G Modem-RF, powered by Qualcomm’s 5G AI Processor. The company is expanding its Snapdragon G Series portfolio and developing advanced chipsets for AI PCs to move beyond the slowing smartphone industry.
Advanced Micro is strengthening its position in the AI market with the MI300 series accelerator family based on the CDNA 3 accelerator architecture. The company’s 7-nanometer-based processors are enhancing its competitive stance against Intel, although it faces tough competition in the traditional computing and GPU markets.
Qualcomm has faced tough competition in the AI PC market from Intel, share shifts among OEMs, and competition in the premium smartphone market from Samsung and MediaTek. Advanced Micro faces challenges in the traditional computing market against Intel and competition in the GPU market from NVIDIA. Both companies have strong growth expectations for 2025.
Qualcomm has declined 27.7%, while Advanced Micro has lost 21.5% in the past year. Qualcomm appears more attractive from a valuation standpoint with a lower forward P/E ratio than Advanced Micro. Both companies carry a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), but Advanced Micro seems to be a better investment option currently based on price performance and long-term earnings growth expectations.
