Reddit has sued AI company Anthropic, accusing it of illegally scraping user comments to train its chatbot Claude. Anthropic denies the claims. Reddit previously had licensing agreements with Google and OpenAI to train AI systems. Anthropic’s Claude chatbot competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and is used by Amazon to improve Alexa.
Anthropic relies on websites like Wikipedia and Reddit for AI training data. A lawsuit alleges that Claude regurgitates copyrighted lyrics. Reddit’s lawsuit focuses on breach of terms of use and unfair competition, not copyright infringement. The Associated Press has a licensing agreement with OpenAI for access to text archives.
