A crypto wallet linked to Alphabay donated $31 million in Bitcoin to Silk Road creator Ross Ulbricht. Chainalysis identified the 300 BTC donation and suggested it came from a major vendor on the dark web platform. The donor used mixing services to hide the trail, indicating potential criminal origins. Alphabay’s takedown played a key role in the investigation.

The analysis revealed that the donation was “legitimate but not legitimate funds” according to ZachXBT. Chainalysis helped identify AlphaBay-linked Bitcoin addresses in the past. Since President Trump pardoned Ulbricht in January, the motivation behind the donation remains unknown. Bitcoin held since the investigation could have appreciated over 40-fold.
