The Securities and Exchange Commission named Kurt Hohl, with 26 years at Ernst & Young, as its new chief accountant effective July 7. He succeeds Paul Munter, who stepped down in January after holding the role since January 2023. Hohl is taking over during a critical time for accounting regulation as a tax bill advancing in Congress could eliminate the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board.

Hohl, a CPA with extensive auditing experience, is well-equipped for the role. However, the transition could be challenging if the SEC takes on PCAOB responsibilities. Nicole Wright, an accounting professor at James Madison University, expressed concerns about the potential rough transition. Hohl’s experience includes time at the SEC and EY, where he was vice-chair of the global assurance professional practice.

Hohl founded Corallium Advisors post-EY, focusing on auditing, regulatory compliance, and IPOs. The SEC has not commented on his plans. His predecessor, Munter, emphasized the importance of an accounting regulator and financial reporting issues. The chief accountant’s office is crucial in advising the SEC on accounting, auditing, and financial reporting standards.

Hohl is entering the position at a pivotal time for capital markets and aims to reinforce investor confidence through transparent, innovative accounting and auditing policies. His experience at EY and the SEC, along with founding Corallium Advisors, positions him well for the role. The office of the chief accountant plays a key role in protecting investors and advising the SEC on financial standards and regulation.
