Siemens Mobility has completed a €110m modernisation project at the Kijfhoek freight railyard in the Netherlands. The facility now has 14 arrival tracks, 41 classification tracks, and 12 stabling tracks, improving operational efficiency and economic viability. The project includes a 15-year maintenance service agreement to sustain efficiency and minimize lifecycle costs.
The Kijfhoek yard, near Rotterdam, serves as a key logistics hub connecting the Port of Rotterdam with major European industrial centers. The modernization project, awarded in 2021 and completed in May, introduced the Trackguard Cargo MSR32 system for automated yard management, enhancing safety and efficiency in the operational process.
Siemens Mobility’s Head of Mainline, Jens Nordmann, stated that the modernization of Kijfhoek showcases how intelligent automation transforms rail freight operations. By implementing the advanced Trackguard Cargo MSR32 system, they are setting new standards for sustainable freight transport in Europe. Additionally, Siemens has established a long-term framework with Irish Rail for rail infrastructure and maintenance, with an investment of over €100m planned over the next 20 years.
