U.S. stocks closed mostly flat on Friday despite trade war fears. President Trump criticized China for breaking the trade agreement but later expressed optimism. The Dow rose 0.1%, the S&P 500 fell slightly, and the Nasdaq dropped 0.3%.

The Commerce Department reported a 0.1% increase in the PCE index in April and a 2.1% rise year-over-year. Core PCE, excluding food and energy, rose 0.1% in April and 2.5% year-over-year. Consumer spending slowed, rising 0.2% in April.

For the week, all three major indexes posted gains, with the S&P 500 and Dow up 1.9% and 1.6%, respectively. The Nasdaq rose 2% for the week. In May, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq had their best month in more than two years, gaining 6.2% and 9.6%, respectively.
