Stripe to Acquire Crypto Wallet Startup Privy in Bid to Expand Web3 Capabilities

Stripe is acquiring Privy, a crypto wallet infrastructure provider, to make blockchain tools easier to integrate into mainstream digital products. Privy creates embedded wallets for apps and websites, simplifying onboarding and reducing user drop-off. Privy has grown since 2021, powering over 75 million accounts across 1,000 teams, facilitating billions in transactions.

Privy, based in New York, has raised over $40 million from investors like Paradigm, Coinbase, and Sequoia Capital. Stripe’s acquisition of Privy follows its purchase of Bridge, a stablecoin infrastructure firm, for $1.1 billion. The deal enabled Stripe to offer stablecoin-funded accounts for businesses to hold and transfer funds abroad.

The acquisition of Privy by Stripe will see the former continue to operate independently but be integrated into Stripe’s suite of crypto tools. The deal’s terms were not disclosed, but the transaction is expected to close in the coming weeks.
