Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) provide a low-cost way for investors to track indexes or benefit from experienced managers to beat the market. In May 2025, top-performing ETFs included VanEck Uranium and Nuclear Technologies UCITS ETF and Global X Uranium UCITS ETF, sourced from Morningstar Direct.
To find the best-performing ETFs, Morningstar screened those in equity, allocation, or fixed-income categories available in the UK, excluding ETNs and funds with less than $25 million in total assets. The list included six funds in the equity technology category, with an average rise of 8.95% in May.
The top 10 best-performing ETFs for May 2025 were VanEck Uranium and Nuclear Technologies UCITS ETF, Global X Uranium UCITS ETF, VanEck Crypto & Blockchain Innovators UCITS ETF, WisdomTree Blockchain UCITS ETF, Invesco CoinShares Global Blockchain UCITS ETF, Amundi MSCI Semiconductors UCITS ETF, HANetf ICAV – Sprott Uranium Miners UCITS ETF, ARK Artificial Intelligence & Robotics UCITS ETF, iShares Blockchain Technology UCITS ETF, and WisdomTree Europe Defence UCITS ETF.
VanEck Uranium and Nuclear Technologies UCITS ETF was the best-performing ETF in May, with a 28.46% return, outperforming the average equity natural resources fund. The VanEck ETF has a Morningstar Medalist Rating of Bronze and was launched in February 2023.
The second-best performing ETF in May was the Global X Uranium UCITS ETF, returning 28.44%. The passively managed Global X ETF was launched in April 2022 and has a Morningstar Rating of Neutral.
VanEck Crypto & Blockchain Innovators UCITS ETF ranked third for the month with a 23.64% return. The passively managed VanEck ETF has a Morningstar Medalist Rating of Bronze and was launched in April 2021.
WisdomTree Blockchain UCITS ETF ranked fourth in May with a 17.23% return. The passively managed WisdomTree ETF does not yet have a Morningstar Medalist Rating.
Invesco CoinShares Global Blockchain UCITS ETF was the fifth-best performer, gaining 16.94% in May. The Invesco ETF has a Morningstar Medalist Rating of Bronze and was launched in March 2019.
Amundi MSCI Semiconductors UCITS ETF was the sixth-best performing ETF in May, with a 15.78% return. The passively managed Amundi ETF does not yet have a Morningstar Medalist Rating.
HANetf ICAV – Sprott Uranium Miners UCITS ETF ranked seventh in May, returning 15.03%. The passively managed HANetf ETF has a Morningstar Medalist Rating of Bronze and was launched in May 2022.
ARK Artificial Intelligence & Robotics UCITS ETF ranked eighth for the month, returning 14.78%. The actively managed ARK ETF has a Morningstar Rating of Neutral and was launched in April 2024.
iShares Blockchain Technology UCITS ETF ranked ninth in May with a 14.58% gain. The passively managed iShares ETF has a Morningstar Medalist Rating of Bronze and was launched in September 2022.
WisdomTree Europe Defence UCITS ETF was the tenth-best performing ETF in May, gaining 14.49%. The passively managed WisdomTree ETF does not yet have a Morningstar Medalist Rating and was first launched in March 2025.
