The UK’s Groceries Code Adjudicator is launching an investigation into Amazon for alleged delays in payments to suppliers. The investigation will focus on breaches of the Groceries Code from March 2022 to June 2025, looking into the impact on suppliers and the root causes of any issues.
The investigation will cover Amazon’s practices related to delays in payments, including receipt of goods, payment processes, and handling of supplier concerns. The agency will focus on the period since January 2024 to understand Amazon’s current practices fully and ensure compliance with the Groceries Code.
Following reports of Code issues from suppliers, the Adjudicator had previously warned Amazon to take action to comply with the Code. Based on further evidence and monitoring of Amazon’s actions, the GCA has decided to launch a targeted investigation into the e-commerce giant.
The GCA is calling for direct suppliers and stakeholders to share their experiences with supplying Amazon as part of the investigation. The call for evidence will close on August 8, and all responses will be kept confidential. The Adjudicator emphasized the importance of addressing delays in payment to protect suppliers from financial harm.
