IG Group, a UK-listed trading company, launches cryptocurrency trading for retail investors, offering access to 31 crypto assets, including Bitcoin, Ether, and XRP. This move marks a direct entry into spot crypto trading as crypto adoption grows in the UK. The service is provided in partnership with Uphold.
IG’s latest offering allows customers to switch between crypto accounts and stock trading accounts on the IG platform. Uphold will handle all customer transactions and pricing data, fully integrated into IG’s user experience. This marks a significant milestone in the UK’s crypto journey, according to IG’s UK managing director.
Previously, IG introduced crypto CFD trading for institutional clients. Unlike spot trading, CFDs allow traders to speculate on prices without owning the underlying asset. IG also allows clients to trade CFDs on 11 major cryptocurrencies. In early 2021, IG halted its retail crypto offering in the UK due to a ban on crypto derivatives trading.
IG’s move into crypto aligns with the UK’s progress in crypto regulations. The UK FCA recently launched a consultation on stablecoin issuers and crypto custody providers. The government published draft regulations for cryptocurrencies to protect investors. Crypto adoption is booming in the UK, with a significant increase in new crypto owners outpacing Europe, according to Gemini.
