Undergraduate accounting enrollment hit a 5-year high in spring 2025, with 188,571 students, up 11.3% from the previous year. The increase outpaced overall business majors and comes amidst changes in licensure rules to attract more students to the profession.

National post-secondary enrollment grew 3.2% overall, with community colleges seeing the largest growth. Professor Jack Castonguay believes the rise in accounting interest is due to perceived industry stability during economic uncertainty, rather than recent licensure changes. Job demand and earning potential are top reasons for majoring in accounting.

While the increase in accounting students is seen as positive, AICPA CEO Susan Coffey notes more work is needed to strengthen the accounting labor pipeline and retain students in the profession long-term. Technology, shorter paths to advancement, and improving work culture are key areas for improvement in the industry.
