UnitedHealth Group considers bids to divest Latin American unit

UnitedHealth Group is considering bids to sell its Latin American operations after incurring over $8bn in losses. Urgency to offload Banmedica in Colombia and Chile has intensified due to financial pressures. Four non-binding bids, estimated at $1bn, have been received from Acon Investments, Patria Investments, Christus Health, and Auna.

Despite Banmedica’s profitability with an EBITDA of over $200m, it is considered too small for UnitedHealth’s interests. Brazilian investment bank BTG Pactual is advising on the sale. The company hopes to set a deadline for binding proposals by July to focus on more profitable markets. UnitedHealth returned to profitability in Q1 2025, with $6.4bn in net earnings.

New group CEO Stephen Hemsley succeeded Andrew Witty in May. The news was originally published by Life Insurance International.
