US household wealth dropped in first quarter as tariff concerns hit stocks

From Yahoo Finance: 2025-06-12 12:14:00

Household wealth in the US fell at the end of the first quarter to $169.3 trillion, down from $170.9 trillion, due to a stock market decline. The drop was the first since 2023, with $2.3 trillion lost in equity holdings and a $200 billion decrease in real estate value.

The decline may be short-lived as the S&P 1500 Composite index has rebounded with a tentative US-China trade deal. Total nonfinancial debt grew at a slower pace of 2.8% in the first quarter, mainly due to reduced federal government borrowing. Private nonfinancial debt increased, driven by a rise in nonfinancial business debt.

Household debt growth slowed to 1.9%, the lowest rate since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
