Volvo CE plans to invest $260.3m in crawler excavator production globally to meet rising demands. The investment will enhance operational efficiency and reduce reliance on long-distance logistics, with major allocations for South Korea, Sweden, and North America. This move aims to increase capacity, flexibility, and reduce supply chain risks.
The strategic investment will be made over the coming years to establish production capacity closer to key markets. This will lead to shorter delivery times and customized solutions for regional needs. By lowering supply chain risks, Volvo CE aims to manage economic challenges effectively while reducing carbon emissions through minimized transportation distances.
Volvo CE’s head, Melker Jernberg, emphasized the commitment to quality, innovation, and competence to better serve customers. By expanding facilities and investing in crawler excavator business closer to key markets, Volvo CE aims to deliver greater value and respond to growing demand. Upgrades at the Changwon site in South Korea will enhance global volumes and capabilities within Asia.
In Europe, Sweden will host the production of crawler excavators, while the final decision on location, scope, and timing is set for 2025. An excavator assembly line will also be installed in the Shippensburg factory in the US to cater to the North American market. The Changwon factory plays a crucial role in Volvo CE’s global industrial network, boasting essential competencies in manufacturing, product development, and purchasing.
